Why We Relocated to Raleigh
What’s it like living in the city of Oaks and Triangle Area
By Robert Campbell | Assoc. Broker
Relocating to Raleigh, North Carolina can be an exciting opportunity. Raleigh is a growing and thriving city that offers a high quality of life with a relatively low cost of living.
When my wife and I both relocated here a few years ago, we weren’t so sure on how we would fit and find our rhythm at first. We just came off living in Southern California for several years and got used to the way it was out west, lots of sunshine, newer communities, ocean, and mountains right nearby, oh and endless palm trees swaying in the breeze. Sounds lovely, but as life has it, it ran its course, and we needed to get back to the east coast, to be closer to family, care for my father in-law and realistically “slow down’ a bit. Leading up to our relocation, the wife had 2 major surgeries for endometriosis, our real sate business was slowing down (Covid 19 era) and home values soaring, making it the perfect moment to relocate.
Why we choose the Raleigh area? We landed on North Carolina after researching which states (east coast) had a good economic structure, growth potential, and established infrastructure and North Carolina had it. We looked into the major hubs of Charlotte, Raleigh and Durham and we narrowed it down to the Greater Raleigh area a suburb called Cary because of its proximity to everything, minutes to downtown Raleigh, minutes to the airport (RDU) plus only 2 hours from the beautiful mountain communities like Asheville, and 2 hours to the The Outer Banks like Wilmington, plus Cary has train access (The Piedmont) to Charlotte, Durham and fun places like Downtown Raleigh, or take the train to PNC Arena for a Carolina Hurricanes game or on of the many concerts, making it fun way to travel.
Whatever your reasons maybe, Raleigh will not disappoint. With its booming economy, vertical growth, extensive greenways for hiking and biking, endless lakes, family events to 5-star shopping at such places as Shops at North Hills, Fenton Cary, to The Streets at Southpoint, you’ll be sure to make this place yours.
Whatever your reasons maybe, Raleigh will not disappoint.
With all the above aside, here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan your move:
HOUSING: Raleigh’s housing market is competitive, particularly in popular areas like downtown, North Hills, and Cameron Village. Be prepared to act quickly and consider working with a local real estate agent to help you find the right home or rental.
COST OF LIVING: Overall, the cost of living in Raleigh is lower than many other major cities in the United States. However, certain expenses like healthcare and education can be relatively expensive. Make sure to factor in these costs as you plan your budget.
CLIMATE: Raleigh has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and mild winters. While the weather is generally pleasant, it can be humid in the summer months.
EMPLOYMENT: Raleigh is home to several major employers, particularly in the technology, healthcare, and education sectors. Research job opportunities in your field before moving and consider networking with local professionals to make connections.
LIFESTYLE: Raleigh offers a range of recreational and cultural opportunities, from outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking to world-class museums and cultural events. It’s also a relatively family-friendly city, with good schools and a low crime rate.
Overall, relocating to Raleigh can be a great choice for those looking for a high quality of life in a growing and dynamic city. With a bit of planning and preparation, you can make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible.
