SPOTLIGHT ON RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA
By Rob Campbell | Assoc. Broker & Team Lead
One of the best parts of living in Raleigh are the beautiful historic neighborhoods. While there is something to love about new developments, you can’t beat the allure of a gorgeous oak tree offering shade on a hot North Carolina day. Boylan Heights is one of those neighborhoods that leaves an impression the minute you arrive. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1985, and a crowd favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Boylan Heights is located in Raleigh, North Carolina and is one of the earliest planned suburbs situated just southwest of downtown Raleigh, known for its tree-lined streets, historic homes, and community spirit.
Boylan Heights was established in the early 20th century and has a rich history. The neighborhood was originally a streetcar suburb, with the first homes being built in the early 1900s. Many of these original homes still stand today, adding to the neighborhood’s historic charm.
In the 1960s, the neighborhood was in decline, however, a group of residents banded together to revitalize the area, forming the Boylan Heights Association in 1971. Thanks to their efforts, the neighborhood was designated as a historic district in 1985, preserving its unique character and architecture for future generations.
Today, Boylan Heights is a vibrant and thriving community, with a mix of young families, professionals, and retirees.
One of the main draws of Boylan Heights is its beautiful homes which includes a mix of architectural styles as Queen Anne/Colonial Revivals, Craftsman, and Dutch Colonials. Many of the homes have been well-preserved and restored, giving the neighborhood a charming and quaint feel.
In addition to its residential character, Boylan Heights also has a commercial district along its western edge on South Street, which features several restaurants, bars, and shops. The neighborhood is also adjacent to the NC State University campus and is within walking distance to downtown Raleigh, making it a popular place to live for students, young professionals, and families.

Boylan Heights is known for its strong sense of community, with residents who truly care about their neighborhood. The neighborhood has an active community association that works to promote the well-being of residents and maintain the character of the neighborhood. There are also a number of events and activities throughout the year that bring residents together, including an annual neighborhood picnic and the historic holiday home tour.
The Boylan Heights Bridge, also known as the South Boylan Avenue Bridge, is a historic bridge located in the Boylan Heights neighborhood. The bridge spans the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks and connects the Boylan Heights neighborhood with the Warehouse District. The Boylan Heights Bridge was originally built in 1923 and was the first reinforced concrete bridge constructed in Raleigh. It was designed by the prominent local engineer, J. M. Broughton, and features an elegant arched design that was characteristic of bridges from that time period.
In recent years, the Boylan Heights Bridge has undergone several renovations to improve its safety and functionality. The bridge is now a popular pedestrian and bicycle route, providing easy access between the Boylan Heights neighborhood and downtown Raleigh. The bridge is also a popular spot for photography and is considered a local landmark by residents of the area.
Another great landmark is The Height House Hotel which was originally known as Montfort Hall. It is a Italianate-style house that was built in 1860 by William Montfort Boylan and sits on the highest point of the now historic Boylan Heights neighborhood. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Over the years, The Height House Hotel has been used for a variety of purposes, including as a single-family home, apartments, and office space. In 2018 a young couple purchased the home and after months of renovations it made it’s debut on May 2021 as a boutique hotel and inspiring space for the local community and today’s creative traveler. The new owners Sarah and Jeff hope every guest who walks through the front door feels the intention and genuine love that went into resurrecting this very special historic landmark.
The Height House Hotel features several distinctive architectural elements, including a wrap-around porch, a round turret, and a steeply pitched roof with multiple gables. When you walk into the property you are initially greeted by these majestic Italianate pillars that opens up and into the central rotunda featuring painted glass skylights that illuminate the room. From there it will lead you to the four front common rooms, The Parlor, Drawing Room, Library and Dining Room each restored and used as originally intended when the property was built. Meticulous care was taken to maintain the integrity of the original architecture while incorporating modern and vintage touches throughout for comfortable luxury.
Overall, Boylan Heights is a wonderful neighborhood with a rich history and a strong sense of community. Its beauty and proximity to downtown Raleigh makes it a popular choice for many. If you’re considering moving to Raleigh or just looking for a great place to live, Boylan Heights should definitely be on your list.
